Frenchman admits to being a fan of the legendary singer following his death on the morning of 11 January
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has paid tribute to music legend David Bowie following the Life on Mars singer’s death at the age of 69 this morning.
Bowie, who died after an 18-month battle with cancer, reached iconic status with hits including Let's Dance, Space Oddity, Starman, Modern Love and Heroes.
The Gunners boss was speaking ahead of the Premier League match against Liverpool on Wednesday night but started his weekly press briefing by joining the likes of Madonna, Kanye West and Ricky Gervais in paying tribute to Bowie.
Wenger said: “I am a fan of his music. The message he gave to my generation was important - be strong enough to be yourself.”
1977 hit Heroes, in particular, has long been associated with sporting triumphs and featured prominently during the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Bowie's son Duncan Jones, confirmed the news while a statement was also issued on his various social media accounts.
"David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer," it said.
"While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family's privacy during their time of grief."
