Rafa Benitez will attempt to breathe life into Liverpool’s crumbling season by making a move for Patrick Vieira.

The former Arsenal midfielder, who is out of favour at Inter Milan, is believed to be keen on a move back to the Premier League in a bid to bolster his chances of claiming a place in France’s World Cup squad.

Benitez, meanwhile wants strength and experience in his midfield with Javier Mascherano and Lucas both struggling for form and summer signing Alberto Aquilani yet to make a start for the Reds.

The under-fire Liverpool boss is also believed to be interested in bringing another former Premier League winner, Ruud van Nistelrooy to the club with the Dutchman also keen to make the switch to Merseyside.

Meanwhile, there was no sympathy in the Manchester United camp in the wake of Liverpool’s Champions League exit on Tuesday with Gary Neville claiming ‘they got what they deserved.’

He said: “We are where we are because we deserve to be there and it’s the same with Liverpool.

“We went out ourselves a few years back. They just haven’t performed well enough in the Champions League to get the results.”
