Chelsea hope John Terry will agree to new deal at half pay
Saturday 19 April 2014
Chelsea are hoping that John Terry will come to an agreement about the terms of a new contract “amicably” during the next fortnight, according to the club’s assistant coach Steve Holland.
The 33-year-old’s current deal expires at the end of the season and he has been offered only a one-year extension, which is believed to be worth around half of his current salary of £165,000 a week.
Holland rejected any suggestions of tension between the former England centre-back and the club, and added that Chelsea would go through a similar process with two other stalwarts, Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard.
Left-back Cole, 33, signed a new Chelsea deal in January 2013, while 35-year-old midfielder Frank Lampard had to wait until May last year before his one-year extension was confirmed.
“John has had an outstanding season; we have the best defensive record in the Premier League and he’s played in almost all of that and been a major part of it all,” said Holland. “I know that John wants to stay at Chelsea, and Chelsea want John to stay, so hopefully that situation can be concluded amicably over the next few weeks.
“It’s the same situation [with Lampard and Cole]. We’re dealing with not just normal players, but magnificent servants for this club over a long period. So full respect will be given for those players.”
Chelsea are adhering to their policy of offering outfield players over 30 only one-year deals on reduced terms. But Terry has attracted interest from Turkish club Galatasaray among others. Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has already taken the lucrative path to the Istanbul club.
