Club guide: Everton
Saturday 14 August 2010
Sack Race: 40-1
M Gueye (Strasbourg, £900,000), J Silva (CD Aves, £500,000), J Beckford (Leeds, free), J Mucha (Legia Warsaw, free)
total spent: £1.4m
L Jutkiewicz (Coventry City, £200,000), J Ruddy (Norwich City, undisc), D Gosling (Newcastle, free)
total made: £200,000
Player to watch
Jack Rodwell. The midfielder will come under particular scrutiny and should soon receive a chance with the senior England squad if his development continues at current rate.
Unclear how well cheap new signings from home (Beckford) and abroad (Gueye, Mucha, Silva), will fare in the Premier League.
David Moyes remains hamstrung by lack of serious money and his achievements are all the moreworthy because of it.
Story of the summer
The storming finish to the last campaign continued as Moyes’ side enjoyed a fine pre-season. Tim Cahill has shrugged off a disappointing World Cup and keeping Mikel Arteta and Steven Pienaar (so far) leaves fans hopeful.
Last season 8th
Strong second half of campaign with only two defeats.
This season 7th
Can continue good work if they avoid injuries.
