Joey Barton has launched a blistering attack on Crystal Palace’s imminent appointment of Roy Hodgson, claiming that the former England manager “has no personality at all”.

On Monday morning, Palace sacked new manager Frank de Boer four games into the Premier League season on Monday after suffering the worst start to an English top-flight campaign for nearly 100 years.

The 47-year-old former Ajax player and manager only took charge on June 26 with a three-year contract, but his first four Premier League games all ended in defeat.

Hodgson, a regular attendee at Selhurst Park and a local man who is seen as the best bet to maximise the potential of Palace's squad, was first contacted about his interest in the role in August and is now poised to accept the position.

But Barton is less than impressed with Palace’s imminent appointment, attacking Hodgson’s managerial record while appearing on talkSPORT show Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“He’s just got no charisma, no personality at all!” Barton said.

Barton is no fan of Hodgson

“Did you see him at the back end of that England campaign? He just looked like he needed to be taken out into the back garden and have someone pull the trigger on him.

“A lot of people say he’s a great fella, but I just don’t think [he’s the right fit for the Palace job].

“I didn’t see the Frank de Boer appointment, I thought it was a bit left field and I think if you’re them you want somebody who lifts the place up.”

Hodgson faces a tough task as the new manager if he does take the job, with Palace playing Manchester City and Manchester United away and Chelsea at home in their next four Premier League matches.
