Former Aston Villa striker Atkinson died after being shot with Taser by police in Telford
The news that former Aston Villa striker Dalian Atkinson has died has left many football fans shocked, and has led to a number of social media users sharing his memorable goal that won the first Match of the Day goal of the season award.
The iconic strike against Wimbledon became one of the first memorable moments since the creation of the Premier League from the old Football League First Division, and was crowned the best goal of the season by the BBC football highlights show.
Atkinson died on Monday morning after being Tasered by police officers responding to an alert “for the safety of an individual” at a home in Telford. After being shot by Taser, the former Premier League footballer was given medical treatment, but West Mercia Police confirmed that Atkinson died around 90 minutes later. He was 48 years old.
A number of leading football clubs have taken to Twitter to express their condolences and sadness at the news of his passing, and many have also responded by sharing the video of the goal in an effort to remember the iconic moment from his career.
The move saw Atkinson pick up the ball in his own half, before embarking on a mazy run that fends off four attempted tackles and chipping Wimbledon goalkeeper Hans Segers when spotting the Dutchman off his line.
