Manchester United may have suffered their second defeat in three games on their pre-season tour today, but that hasn’t stopped them from having a little fun of their own in training.
Having put his side through an intense training session, manager David Moyes gave the squad one last drill – score and you’re done, but miss and you’re staying on.
One-by-one, the United outfield players had to try and beat goalkeepers David de Gea and Anders Lindegaard from the edge of the box, and should they score they were finished with the days training session.
Miss though, and they would have to take another shot, and keep going until there was one man left.
Easy? Well last season’s Premier League top goal scorer didn’t find it that easy, as Robin van Persie missed his first chance at goal along with a number of others that included Ryan Giggs and Ashley Young.
United fans will have enjoyed the sight of new signing Wilfried Zaha smashing his first attempt into the back of the next, and they will hope to see plenty more of that if he gets his chance to shine at Old Trafford this season.
He was joined by Jesse Lingard, who has impressed so far on the tour as he notched another goal in today’s defeat to Yokohama, as well as Michael Carrick, Danny Welbeck and the unlikely Jonny Evans.
And as they were slowly whittled down, just three remain in the form of Patrice Evra, Alex Buttner and home favourite Shinji Kagawa. Unfortunately for the watching crowd, it was the Japanese international who was left last man standing, with Moyes - who by this time was adjudicating each shot – sending him from the field of play in embarrassment.
It could have been a different story though, had Moyes noticed both Giggs and Rio Ferdinand sneak off without scoring their efforts. It comes after Kagawa expressed his disappointment with his performance in his debut season with the club earlier this week.
He’ll hope that this latest failing will not be a sign of things to come ahead of the new season.
