David Moyes is the bookies' favourite to replace Tim Sherwood as Aston Villa manager, with former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers also in the running.

Fomer Manchester United manager Moyes, who is now in charge of Real Sociedad in Spain, is the current favourite with odds as short of 6/4.

Rodgers, who was sacked by Liverpool last month, is not far behind with odds fo 4/1.

Villa fired manager Tim Sherwood on Sunday after eight months in charge of the Premier League club.

Villa lost 2-1 at home to Swansea on Saturday, a sixth straight defeat in the league, having not won since the opening day of the season in August against Bournemouth.

The club is in the Premier League relegation zone with only four points from 10 matches.

"The board has monitored the performances closely all season and believes the results on the pitch were simply not good enough and that a change is imperative," Villa said in a statement.

"The club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Tim for all his efforts during a difficult period last season and for the many positive contributions he has made to the entire football setup."

Sherwood replaced Paul Lambert as manager in February when the club dropped into the relegation zone.

Moyes' Sociedad won 4-0 at Levante on Sunday, ending a run of three matches without a win.
