Everton vs Manchester United team news: Wayne Rooney starts against former club
A look at the sides for today's game at Goodison Park
Wayne Rooney is in the Manchester United starting line-up against his former side having overcome an ankle injury.
He and Michael Carrick are fit again, as are Ander Herrera and Marcos Rojo. All of them start with the exception of Carrick, who is on the bench. Louis van Gaal has opted for a midfield pairing of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin, who are joined by Juan Mata and Herrera. Anthony Martial starts in attack alongside Rooney.
Ashley Young is out with a tight calf and Paddy McNair is unavailable after rupturing his liver.
Rooney has a poor record on his old stomping ground, having not scored at the home of his former club since 2007. The Manchester United captain hasn't scored at any away ground in the league since November, a stretch of 17 games.
For Everton, John Stones and Seamus Coleman return to the side having overcome knee and hamstring injuries respectively.
It was thought that Tom Cleverley and Steven Pienaar would also be fit, but neither are in the squad. Kevin Mirallas, who is available after suspension, is among the subsitutes.
Manchester United are looking to get back to winning ways after their worrying 3-0 loss to Arsenal prior to the international break.
That won't be easy against an in form Everton side who have lost just one of their eight Premier League games this season. The Toffees also boast an excellent recent record at home to United, winning the last three league meetings at Goodison Park. The most recent was a 3-0 win in April.
