Hernandez signs five-year deal to stay at Old Trafford

Javier Hernandez has agreed a new five-year contract with Manchester United, bringing to an end speculation that he might be tempted by Real Madrid.

Eduardo Hernandez, the player's agent, has revealed that the 23-year-old's initial deal at Old Trafford was a "tentative" one, agreed on the basis that player and club would see how his career panned out. But after 20 goals in 45 appearances in all competitions last season, the £6m acquisition from Chivas Guadalajara joins the ranks of the most highly paid, commanding a salary of around £90,000 a week in a deal which secures his future until 2016.

Eduardo Hernandez said: "There is nothing in the speculation [with Real] and it was never likely that Javier would leave United. His initial contract was a little tentative for Manchester and for Javier because it enabled them both to see if they could fit together and if he could achieve what was expected of him. Both sides have met their expectations, however, and United were happy to reward Javier after his very good performances last season.

"United came up with a very good offer. We are very happy to reach an agreement with United. Javier was not badly paid with his initial contract, but it was his first contract and, with respect, not comparable with the likes of [Wayne] Rooney and Nani."
