Wayne Rooney became only the second Premier League player to score 150 goals for one club as Manchester United came from 2-0 down to win at Hull, and quickly labelled his equaliser as one of the best.

The England striker brought his side level with a wonderful effort from 25 yards midway through the first half. Receiving Danny Welbeck’s chest down on the edge of the box, he unleashed a dipping volley into the top left hand corner of Allan McGregor’s goal to join Thierry Henry, who netted 175 for Arsenal.

"That was one of my best goals. It was a big goal for us. We had some bad results at the start of the season but we are showing our quality now. We are fighting hard and hopefully we can surprise some people now."

Sloppy defending had seen United fall two goals behind inside 13 minutes at the KC Stadium, but they recovered to become the first side to win on Boxing Day from such a deficit in Premier League history.

Rooney was once again instrumental in leading United’s charge. The 28-year-old provided a pinpoint free-kick for Chris Smalling to head the first, and started the move that eventually led to James Chester’s decisive own-goal and the victory that the forward declared crucial.

"There were a lot of long balls to deal with in the last five minutes but we dug deep and it was a massive result for us. We started poorly today."

The result lifted David Moyes’ team to seventh in the table, and eight points off the top ahead of games at Norwich and home to Tottenham in the next week.
