Jack Wilshere has denied any allegations of assault after he was filmed being questioned by police over an "altercation" at a West End nightclub.

The Arsenal and England midfielder, who has not played a game this season because of injury, was shown speaking to officers in footage obtained by The Sun and the Daily Mirror.

A man claims to have been assaulted in the disturbance.

The two videos, show a number of police officers intervening as others, believed to be friends, attempt to obscure him from the view of those attempting to take footage on their mobile phones.

Wilshere has strongly denied any accusation of assault, while Arsenal said they are "aware of the incident" and described it as a "private matter".

The incident took place at Cafe de Paris, a nightclub on Coventry Street near London's Leicester Square, on Sunday night.

"At 2.15am on Sunday, 3 April, police patrolling Coventry Street became aware of two groups of males involved in an altercation," a Scotland Yard Spokesman said.

"Officers intervened and one man claimed he was assaulted. He did not require hospital treatment. There have been no arrests and inquiries continue. We will not comment on who may or may not have been involved."

Wilshere is said to have been at the nightclub with girlfriend Andriani Michael and friends.

The talented 24-year-old that is sure to have angered Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger and England manager Roy Hodgson. Wilshere has not played since June 2015 because of a broken leg but returned to training last week, hoping to make a late push for England's Euro 2016 squad.

"Once he is completely fit and competitive he will be available for Arsenal and for the national team," said Wenger on Friday.

"If he’s completely fit, then no, it’s not a gamble to take him to France. Would I prefer him to stay here over the summer? No. You want your players to compete."

It is the latest off-field incident for Wilshere, who has not been a stranger to controversy. In 2010 Wilshere was arrested for assault after a fight outside of a nightclub and eventually cautioned. In 2011 he accepted a police warning for attempting to spit on a taxi driver wearing a Tottenham Hotspur hat.

In 2012 he was warned by Uefa about betting after tweeting during an Arsenal Champions League game. He as banned two games for making an obscene gesture at Manchester City fans in 2013, while Sky were forced to apologise after Wilshere led an x-rated chant against Tottenham Hotspur live on television during Arsenal's FA Cup victory parade - he did the same in 2015. He has also been caught smoking three times, in 2013 outside a London nightclub, at a pool party in Las Vegas in 2014 and holding a shisha pipe at another London nightclub in 2015.
