John Terry has revealed that the most memorable match of his career was the Champions League final victory over Bayern Munich in 2012 – despite missing the game through suspension.

The Chelsea captain was interviewed by Daily Mail columnist and former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher ahead of this weekend’s Premier League encounter with Bournemouth. The Blues have struggled so far this season and look to have lost all chances of retaining the Premier League title that they won last season, although they have improved somewhat over the last fortnight and still believe that they can reach the top four come May.

Terry has made the third-most appearances for the Blues, having played 461 Premier League matches ad 672 times overall for the club, with only Ron Harris and Peter Bonetti featuring more often.

In that time, he has tasted both success and defeat in a Champions League final, and he revealed that while the 2008 loss to Manchester United remains his worst moment in football – where his missed penalty contributed to Chelsea’s shootout defeat – the 2012 win over Bayern stands out as the best even though he missed the match.

Terry appeared after the game at Bayern’s Allianz Arena to lift the trophy and celebrate with his team-mates, with the former England captain wearing the full Chelsea kit despite not playing in the match – something that has become a running joke with social media users.

Terry also revealed his all-time Chelsea best XI, in which he included fellow Stamford Bridge icons Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba, both who are now playing in the United States and the MLS.

“I’m going to play 4-3-3,” Terry said. “So we’ll say, Cech, Ivanovic, Carvalho, Ash [Cole]. I’m putting myself in!

“Now this is where it gets hard… Lamps… Didier [Drogba]… Robben, [Damien] Duffer was good, wasn’t he? But it’s got to be Hazard in that position. Then Makelele, plus Zola. It’s got to be him, hasn’t it? We’d be s*** at corners but we’d be all right otherwise!”

Terry also revealed his interest in following his former team-mates to the MLS, simply because he could not play for a team that would face Chelsea, should the club refuse to extend his contract beyond the end of the season.

Lampard said previously that he could not play against the club, only to join Manchester City on loan from sister-club New York City FC and actually score against the Blues, but Terry says there is “no chance” of the same happening with him.

“No. No chance. No chance. America, maybe. But physically I feel like I can still play,” Terry added. “Do I want to play? Of course I do. But then decisions come in to it with your family. What if you go somewhere and it doesn’t work out? Everything else comes into play, doesn’t it?”
