Chelsea skipper Terry misses Lampard but thinks Fabregas is the perfect man to replace the club's all-time top goalscorer

Chelsea captain John Terry has admitted "it feels different" after arriving at pre-season without departed club legend Frank Lampard.

The pair have played at Stamford Bridge for the last 13 years but Lampard, Chelsea's top goalscorer of all time with 211 goals, has now moved to the Melbourne Heart for six months before joining New York City FC.

Long-serving goalkeeper Petr Cech, whose place is under threat from Belgian youngster Thibaut Courtois, is now the only other player in the Chelsea squad left from the title-winning side of 2004-05.

"It feels different coming in and Lamps not being sat next to me," Terry, who scored during Chelsea's 5-0 pre-season win over Wycombe Wanderes, told the club's official magazine.

"We have sat next to each other in the changing room since... well, since he signed for the club really. I’ve become really close to Lamps and Ash and they were my two best mates at the club.

"So I’m really sad to see arguably the best player the club has ever had, in Lamps, move on, for what he brought to the dressing room and as a mate.

"You understand that you all get older, but you just hope that point doesn’t come."

Terry also saw Ashley Cole leave for Serie A side Roma after Jose Mourinho opted not to extend his contract at the club.

"It’s the same with Ash. It was a big move for him to come here from Arsenal at the time. He took a lot of stick but it was a bold move and it took a lot of guts to do what he did. For me, he has been the best left-back England has ever had."

But despite the loss of two legends, one-club man Terry feels like new £30m man Cesc Fabregas will be a more than adequate replacement for Lampard.

"He’s a very good signing," Terry added. "He is great on the ball, a great box-to-box player, he scores an awful lot of goals as well and he has got an aggressive streak in him too – I certainly remember that from his Arsenal days.

"I’m sure he is going to fit in really well at Chelsea and do well in the years to come."

The 27-year-old joined Chelsea for £30m earlier this summer, having been in and out of the Barcelona team in his three years with the Spanish giants.

Despite a parting shot from his former club, who said his performances had deteriorated during his stay, Fabregas scored 42 goals and added 48 assists in 151 games with Barcelona.

It remains to be seen what position Mourinho plays Fabregas in, whether he intends to use him behind the strikers as he was while at Barcelona, or whether he will revert to a deeper role like the one he excelled in at Arsenal.

He joins Chelsea's other new summer signings Diego Costa, Filipe Luis and youngster Mario Pasalic as Jose Mourinho looks to win the Blues their first Premier League title since Carlo Ancelotti led the club to the Double in 2010.
