Jose Mourinho to Manchester United: Cristiano Ronaldo hopes former manager is a success at Old Trafford

The Portugal international shared a difficult working relationship with Mourinho at Real Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldo wants Jose Mourinho to return Manchester United to former glories, as his compatriot prepares to be announced as the club’s new manager.

The Portugal international shared a difficult working relationship with Mourinho during their time together at Real Madrid, between 2010 and 2013, particularly in the coach’s final year.

Nevertheless, the pair share an agent, Jorge Mendes, and won both the Copa del Rey and the La Liga title together.

Ronaldo, who developed into one of the world’s best players during his six-year spell at Old Trafford, now hopes that his former manager can reinvigorate his old club.

"He's already signed, hasn't he? I think it's good. If it's something United wanted I think it's good," he told La Sexta, the Spanish television programme.

"I hope Manchester United get back to being what they were because it's an impressive club but in the last years they lacked an identity a bit.

"And it hurts me seeing United like that because it's a club that I carry in my heart. I wish Mourinho can carry them back to the top."

The 31-year-old forward, who is currently preparing to lead Portugal at this summer’s European Championships, went on to rule out a reunion with Mourinho and a return to Manchester.

"Right now yes I am happy and I want to stay at this club," he said. "I don't see any other club that is better than Real Madrid. If you weigh things up there is no better club.

"So all other clubs can forget about me because Real Madrid is the best."
