Jürgen Klopp said on Friday that he will control all transfer decisions at Liverpool as he was unveiled as their new manager at an extraordinary press conference inside Anfield’s Centenary Stand.

The 48-year-old, who described himself as “the Normal One” responding to a question about his similarities with Jose Mourinho, declared that under his guidance, accountability would be obvious.

The German, whose passion for the club made owners Fenway Sports Group choose him over Carlo Ancelotti for the post, is happy to work with Liverpool’s infamous transfer committee having operated under a similar structure at Borussia Dortmund.

We have to do it one way and that way is my way

“The only thing I need is players that want to help the team,” he said. “They have to listen to what I say, that is very important, because I believe it is better to have 11 players do the same thing wrong than everybody doing what they want. We have to do it one way and that way is my way.”

He was clear too about the style of football he wishes to implement at Liverpool. When Klopp dismissed Barcelona’s philosophy as a fad, stating that too many managers attempt the impossible by trying copy them, he could have been talking about his predecessor, Brendan Rodgers. “This team needs to create their own style,” he insisted. “If you have the ball you have to be creative but you have to be prepared that if you lose the ball the counter-pressing is very important. It is not a proposal, it is law. I’m only interested in [receiving] 100 per cent off each player.”

Klopp will take training at Melwood for the first time on Monday.
