Jurgen Klopp has agreed to become Liverpool’s manager and will arrive on Merseyside this afternoon after flying in from Dortmund.
Klopp will be unveiled at Anfield tomorrow morning where he will be accompanied Liverpool chairman, Tom Werner who is expected to land in the United Kingdom this evening having travelled from his base in Los Angeles.
Klopp will spend the night in a Liverpool city centre hotel where he will sign a three-year deal with the option of a fourth.
Klopp will bring with him his own backroom team of Zeljko Buvac and Peter Krawietz, colleagues at his former club, Borussia Dortmund.
The appointments beckoned the end of Sean O’Driscoll’s brief spell as assistant manager and while first team coach Gary McAllister has had his role filled too, the Scot could be offered a different position within the club.
Fitness coach Ryland Morgans remains on the staff but Glen Driscoll – the head of performance – and Chris Davies – the head of opposition analysis, will depart under the new regime.
A decision has not yet been taken on the future of goalkeeping coach John Achterberg. Wolfgang de Beer, the specialist who worked under Klopp at the Westfalenstadion, has been at Dortmund since 2001 and remains in place under Klopp’s successor, Thomas Tuchel.
Klopp will earn £7million a year as Liverpool manager. His recruitment is a significant coup by owners Fenway Sports Group, who persuaded the German to end his planned year-long sabbatical from the game after only four months.
Klopp is a two-time Bundesliga winner and in 2013, steered Dortmund to the Champions League final where they lost narrowly to Bayern Munich.
