Kick-off delayed for final Upton Park match as bottles thrown at Manchester United team coach

West Ham United's final match at Upton Park has been delayed by 45 minutes after the Manchester United team bus was caught up in traffic.

Photographs and videos on social media showed bottles, cans and flares being thrown at and near the coach as it struggled to make its way into the ground, with the surrounding roads engulfed by home supporters who had arrived throughout the afternoon ahead of the last match at the ground.

The decision to delay kick-off was taken half an hour before the original start time, with the United team but having only just been allowed in.

"It wasn't nice. The coach was getting smashed up as you saw," Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney said.

"I'm sure you'll see the images. It's disappointing. We know it's a big game for West Ham, big night for them, leaving the stadium, but I'm sure West Ham as a club will be disappointed with what the fans have done."

The incident has echoes of Manchester United's visit to London last month, when they struggled to reach White Hart Lane for a League match with Tottenham Hotspur. Kick-off was delayed then by half an hour, for a match that Louis van Gaal's side lost 3-0.

The club's next match after that defeat was, ironically, an FA Cup match at Upton Park, with the Hammers' social media team quick to make light of the delay days earlier.

West Ham's last weekend match at the venue, against Swansea last Saturday, ended in a 4-1 home defeat.
