Liverpool: Mamadou Sakho's Anfield career over after Jurgen Klopp confirms he is 'not in his plans'

The defender has not been considered part of the first-team by Klopp since he was sent home from the club's pre-season tour of the United States

Mamadou Sakho’s Liverpool career is over after manager Jürgen Klopp said the defender was “not in his plans” for the future.

Sakho had hoped that there was still a way back to the first-team after being frozen out at Anfield by Klopp and sent to train with Liverpool’s Under-23 squad.

However, Klopp has slammed the door shut and the club will now listen to offers for the France international when the transfer window opens in January.

Sakho’s attitude during pre-season rankled with Klopp and he was sent home from their tour of the United States for being “disrespectful” after he missed a flight, training session and team dinner.

The club also took a dim view of a rant on social media network Snapchat in which he claimed fans had been deceived about his absence from the first-team squad.

Klopp said in the broadcast section of his press conference there was “no thought to sell anybody” in his first-team squad in January.

But in a national newspaper break out the German tetchily answered questions about Sakho’s future.

“Of course he is not involved in this (first team squad) but you ask again,” Klopp said irritably. “You should have know it before that he is not involved in this sentence, but then you try it to create a story.

“Now you know, I said it: he is not in these plans for the first team. The first team squad is here (at the training ground). You know all this. Do you really think I would have said Sakho will not be sold in winter? You don't have to check, you knew it before. Now you can use it as you want.

“Once again this actual first-team squad is in this dressing room, from this point of view nobody will be sold.”

West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City, both of whom attempted to sign Sakho on loan before the transfer deadline, retain an interest in the player.

Although Sakho’s wages, increased to £75,000 a week after he signed a new five-year contract with the Reds in September 2015, could hamper any potential permanent move away from Merseyside.

Liverpool look increasingly likely to take a hit on the £18m that former boss Brendan Rodgers paid Paris St Germain for the centre-back in September 2013 now that Klopp has unequivocally decided the player does not have a future.

Klopp went on to say that “nothing has changed” when subsequently asked if Sakho had edged closer to a first-team return.

Sakho has not featured for Liverpool since a 4-0 win over Everton in April having been banned for testing positive for a fat burner, although Uefa subsequently dropped the charge in the summer.

This week he was pictured in Paris at a fashion show for lingerie retailer Victoria Secret with his wife Majda and posed for a photograph with rap artist Tinie Tempah.

Another player linked with a move away from Anfield is Daniel Sturridge, although Klopp is adamant he wants to keep the England striker.

Sturridge, who will miss Sunday’s trip to Bournemouth with a calf injury, has been linked with January moves to West Ham and Stoke City.

“The funny thing is that you create stories that are not stories and then ask me about stories that are not stories,” Klopp said when asked about Sturridge.

“I have had no idea, no thoughts, to sell any players from the first-team squad. I don't think it would make sense.”

Liverpool are boosted by the return of Brazil forward Roberto Firmino after he shook off a calf injury but midfielder Adam Lallana is unlikely to be risked against Eddie Howe’s side despite returning to training following a groin problem.
