As Danny Ings copes with the repercussions of his second serious knee injury in a year it is fair to say his Liverpool team-mate Joe Gomez knows exactly what he is going through.

Ings, the Liverpool striker, is set to miss the rest of the season after a scan confirmed he suffered serious cartilage damage during the EFL Cup game against Spurs last week.

It is another heartbreaking setback for the former Burnley man and Anfield favourite, who missed the bulk of last season after tearing the cruciate ligament in his other knee.

He returned to the squad in May and had made only two appearances this season before his latest setback was confirmed on Wednesday.

One of the first to offer his support was Gomez, who also suffered a serious knee injury last season and who formed a strong friendship with Ings during their recoveries.

Gomes wrote on Instagram: “One of the most positive, down to earth & hardworking people I know... gutted for him but he's bounced back before and will do it again. Helped keep me going and I'll try and do the same. Here for you bro.”

Ings’ Liverpool team-mates Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana, Simon Mignolet and former Reds forward Christian Benteke all offered their support.

Jurgen Klopp, the Liverpool manager, said: “To say we are gutted is an understatement. He’s such a great boy and has worked so hard, he deserved better luck than this.

“He is mentally strong and will have the very best treatment.”
