Luke Shaw offered Manchester United fans a welcome piece of good news on Wednesday night by appearing at the club’s Christmas party without the aid of crutches.

The young left-back suffered a horrific double leg break in his side’s opening Champions League game against PSV Eindhoven in September after a hefty challenge from fellow defender Hector Moreno.

Shaw underwent surgery on the broken leg the same evening and initial estimates suggested that he would be out for action for a minimum of six months.

The prognosis has not officially changed. Louis van Gaal has, however, been impressed by the 20-year-old’s recovery and his positive mind-set since the setback

“Luke is progressing well and is doing as well as we could have hoped at this stage,” the Dutchman said earlier this week.

“We are not putting any timings on his recovery or a return as it is important we allow nature to take its course.

“Luke is working hard during his recuperation to keep his body in the best possible condition,” he added.

“He is receiving plenty of messages of encouragement from supporters, which I know he appreciates.”

Shortly before sustaining the injury, Shaw had established himself as the first-choice left-back for both his club and his country, with his place on the England squad plane to Euro 2016 all but guaranteed.
