Vincent Kompany said Manchester City would take “a lot of positives and confidence” from the 4-1 win over Southampton.
Yaya Toure's penalty gave the title hopefuls an early lead before further goals from Samir Nasri, Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic wrapped up the win. Rickie Lambert replied for Saints from the penalty spot.
City captain Kompany told BT Sport : "It's a good result so we're all happy.
"We knew it was going to be a big game and a very difficult one, so we take a lot of positives and confidence out of this game. Not many teams will dominate a game against Southampton."
City benefited from a huge slice of luck for their second goal as Dzeko flicked a pass from Toure into the path of a clearly offside David Silva. Silva made the most of the opportunity as he set up Nasri for a simple close-range finish.

Kompany said he had not seen TV replays of the goal, but added: "The goals were well built and I thought we didn't need too much possession to create a lot of chances. We can feel happy about the win.
"Our next game is Liverpool and we've got eight days to focus on that.
"It's going to be an important week, but two years ago we had to play Manchester United with three games to go and it was a lot tighter than it was now. We've played these games before and we'll prepare the best we can.
"We're very focused and know there will be difficult games to come, but we want to do the job right."
City boss Manuel Pellegrini believed his team were worthy winners, irrespective of the controversy surrounding his team's second goal.
He said: "The referee decides, if he made a mistake maybe it was important. But I don't think the difference today was just one goal.
"They (Southampton) played very well in the first half, it was difficult for us to hold possession.
"But we scored three goals and had another two clear chances to score. I don't remember they had clear chances to score. I don't remember Joe Hart making a really important save.
"In the second half we played perfect and had five clear chances.
"Now we have an important game against Liverpool, who have to play tomorrow. We'll see what happens in the week, but we have a whole week to prepare and after that game we have six more and Liverpool four. "
Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino was unhappy with the decision, insisting it "killed the game".
He added on BT Sport: "The linesman killed off the game, it's clear. It completely changed the entite game - after that there's nothing to analyse.
"We were superior to City in the first half but it's impossible to fight a decision like that."
On striker Jay Rodriguez, carried off on a stretcher with an injury in the first half, Pochettino added: "We need to analyse how he's doing, but it's not looking good."
