At the end of a football week dominated by Monday’s Ballon d’Or ceremony in Zurich, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger revealed this morning that he is “completely against” the award for the world’s best footballer.
While the Ballon d’Or grows in importance and prestige every year, there are traditionalists – including Wenger - who see it is as inimical to football’s team element. Wenger was not entitled to a vote for Monday’s award, but he said he would not have used it even if he was.
“I would not vote for any Ballon d’Or,” Wenger said at this morning’s press conference at London Colney. “I’m totally against it. I’m a team-lover and a specialist of somebody who loves team work. I’m completely against that. I would not vote for anybody.”

However, Schneiderlin will look to leave the south coast club come the end of the season with Tottenham likely to be the favoured destination to link up with his former manager Mauricio Pochettino, but Arsenal could look to hijack any deal and get one over their North London rivals. Schneiderlin would suit the Gunners playing style, and he certainly has the quality to fit in the current Arsenal first-team – just look at his record over the past two seasons compared to Mikel Arteta and you’d suggest there is only one winner.

The Uruguayan would not come cheap, given that PSG signed him from Napoli for £53m. A January move would be difficult with PSG still in the Champions League.

Wenger revealed that Mathieu Debuchy was “destroyed” after undergoing shoulder surgery which will rule him out until the final weeks of the season. It is the second three-month absence of the season for Debuchy, after an ankle ligament injury he sustained in the autumn.
Now Debuchy, who joined from Newcastle United for £12million in the summer, will likely finish his first Arsenal season having not started many more than 10 Premier League games. “He is destroyed,” Wenger said, “because he is such a keen player, so professional, so willing. It is his first year here and of course he is embarrassed. But it is not his fault.” Wenger described Marko Arnautovic’s push, which caused Debuchy’s awkward fall, as “not needed”.
