Manager confident he will be at Old Trafford next season despite intense speculation over his future

Louis van Gaal expressed his confidence that he would be in charge of Manchester United next season, saying he had faith in the three-year contract he signed when replacing David Moyes.

There were a few boos when the Manchester United manager addressed the crowd after the 3-1 win over Bournemouth that closed their Premier League season, but Van Gaal said he would be looking to win the FA Cup on Saturday and challenge for the title next season.

“The FA Cup is very important to me because I came here to win a title,” he said. ”I am confident I shall be here (next season) because I have signed a three-year contract,” he added before turning his attention to what was required next season.

“The question is how we can attract other players who fit our profile of how we develop players. We need to have a mentally strong team that is important. You have to keep the group young, refreshed and with a winning mentality

“Of course it is possible for us to win the Premier League because Leicester City was more or less a relegation team. We have finished fourth and fifth but in sport nothing is normal. You have to fight for it.”

When reflecting on a season that had seen Manchester United miss out on the Champions League on goal difference, Van Gaal argued that United’s great weakness was in attack. “Defensively, we were one of the best teams in the Premier League but in attack we have to improve.”

Van Gaal argued that, had the game kicked off normally on Sunday afternoon, it might have been possible to put more pressure on Manchester City as well as avoid some inconvenience of his own. He had 11 guests flown over from the Netherlands to watch the match and none were able to see the game.
