Manchester United strolled to a 3-0 win after an energetic start saw them go 2-0 up in the first 20 minutes.

Marouane Fellaini capitalised on United’s early pressure, and the Belgian was composed as he received a through ball from Michael Carrick, before drilling a finish into the bottom corner for United’s first.

Tottenham were reeling after they conceded, and it was Carrick who picked up a loose ball and headed it to the bottom corner of Hugo Lloris's net.

Wayne Rooney capped a miserable first half for Tottenham as he jumped upon a loose pass from Eric Dier, who had a shocking game, before dribbling his way through the Spurs defence and finishing low past Lloris.

Rooney accompanied his neat finish with an elaborate ‘knockout’ celebration, an obvious nod to the headlines he has been creating the weekend, after a video of him getting KO’d by Phil Bardsley surfaced earlier in the day.

In the second half United were happy to sit back and hold onto the ball for long periods, creating the occasional chance, and frustrating an abject Tottenham midfield.

It was an incredibly weak performance from Spurs who could barely build an attack for 90 minutes. Chris Smalling and Phil Jones didn’t notice the suspended Jonny Evans as they seized upon the plentiful Tottenham errors.

The final whistle came as a relief to Spurs, both players and fans, who must have known the game was over before the second half had even begun.

United are now part of an exciting top four, where second and fourth are separated by just two points.
