Bastian Schweinsteiger has revealed that Manchester United will be his last club in Europe and that he “will be ready if the team needs me”.

The remarks follow a turbulent month of speculation for the player with numerous reports suggesting that Jose Mourinho has told Schweinsteiger that he has no future at Old Trafford.

The German played 31 games last season but has trained alone and with the under-21s since Mourinho took over as manager.

Schweinsteiger’s remarks, made via his Twitter account, seem certain to confirm that the player’s future now lies in either the MLS or Chinese Super League.

“MUFC will be my last club in Europe. I respect other clubs, but Manchester United was the only one which could make me leave Bayern Munich. I will be ready, if the team needs me,” he said in a post on Twitter.

“This is all I can say about my current situation. I want to thank the fans for their amazing support over the recent weeks.”

Despite this very public pledge of loyalty, Schweinsteiger looks set to be on his way out from Old Trafford.

Having spent an excess of £140m this summer, United are looking to discard any players deemed surplus to requirements in a bid to recoup as much money as possible. Given his £160,000-a-year wage packet, Schweinsteiger’s departure would help free-up a considerable sum of money.

Schweinsteiger cost £6m from Bayern last summer having been bought by his former Bayern Munich boss Louis van Gaal.

But his first season at United was dogged by injury problems and his last start was against Sheffield United at Old Trafford in the FA Cup in January.
