Memphis Depay’s ambitious yet calamitous overhead kick attempt during Wayne Rooney’s testimonial not only produced a laugh from the Manchester United skipper himself, but also from his six-year-old son Kai.

Rooney took centre stage at Old Trafford on Wednesday night as both United and his former club, Everton, paid tribute to his 12 years at Old Trafford. Rooney was given a guard of honour by both sets of players as he walked out onto the turf with his three sons Kai, Klay and Kit, with the match raising around £5m for charity.

With the Premier League season little over one week away, the match was another chance for Jose Mourinho and Ronald Koeman to tinker with their United and Everton squads respectively, although when it comes to Depay, he made need a bit more work than others.

The Dutchman didn’t enjoy the best of debut seasons at Old Trafford, having fallen out of the first-team shortly after his £25m move due to the impressive form of Anthony Martial. With a new manager and a new season, Depay may have hoped for a new start, but if Wednesday’s match is anything to go by, another 10 months of disappointment is on the cards.

As United teammate Henrikh Mkhitaryan crossed the ball from the right side of the pitch, Depay’s eyes lit up and he readied himself in an attempt to emulate Rooney’s memorable bicycle kick at Old Trafford against Manchester City five years ago.

All did not go according to plan though. Depay failed miserably as he simply fell to the ground, and the television cameras quickly switched to Rooney, who by now had joined his son in the United dug-out. Unfortunately for Depay, the pair had seen the funny side of his terrible effort.

While Kai reacted with a mix of anger and frustration in what was a regular gesture of any football fan, Rooney Snr reacted by erupting into laughter. After taking a glance, Kai joined in, showing that the ‘Like Father, Like Son’ mantra is well and truly alive in the Rooney household.
