Arsenal’s Premier League title credentials have been questioned – by the man who has scored the equal-most goals against them in the division, Wayne Rooney.

The Manchester United forward, who will face Arsenal on Sunday, has scored 10 Premier League goals against the Gunners, and only Robbie Fowler has as good a record against the north Londoners. After a difficult start United have now gone eight matches unbeaten in all competitions after Tuesday night’s draw at Real Sociedad in the Champions League, and while Rooney has acknowledged Arsenal’s improved threat, he has challenged the league leaders to handle the pressure.

The last time Arsenal were five points clear at the top of the division, in February 2008, they suffered a spectacular meltdown, driven by the horrific injury suffered to striker Eduardo in the 2-2 draw at Birmingham City, and then went another four matches without victory before finishing the season in third place.

"We'll have to wait and see where Arsenal are in March," the 28-year-old said.

"We've seen before that they've been in the top two until February or March and then faded away.

"They are doing brilliantly at the minute, so it's down to them to try and stay there and us to catch them."

Arsenal have failed to win in their last six Premier League matches at Old Trafford – including losing the last four – and Rooney is confident this great run will continue.

"We're obviously capable of beating Arsenal," said Rooney. "We've done it many times in the past.

"They're on a good run of form at the moment and they're top of the league, so we know it's going to be a difficult game.

"But we have to go into it with confidence and a belief this is when we can edge closer to them and bring us back into the mix of being at the top of the league."
