Manchester United will honour Wayne Rooney’s 12 years with the club in the form of a pre-season testimonial against his former club Everton at Old Trafford on Wednesday as the two Premier League sides continue their preparations for the new season.

30-year-old Rooney joined United in 2004, two years after he broke on to the scene with Everton with his last-minute match-winning goal against Arsenal announcing his arrival as one of the brightest young talents in English football.

Since completing the switch to Old Trafford, Rooney has won it all with United, with the Champions League victory of 2007/08 and the five Premier League titles particular highlights in a trophy-laden club career.

Of course, while it will all be about Rooney when he walks out onto the Old Trafford pitch with his three sons, Kai, Klay and Kit, there is plenty more on offer with United fans eager to get a first look at their new signings.

The majority of supporters have been left to watch Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan from afar due to United’s pre-season tour of China and Sweden, but they will finally get to see the trio perform at Old Trafford for the first time.

Everton fans making the short trip to Manchester will be largely familiar with their squad given the club are yet to make an outfield signing, but they will at least see new manager Ronald Koeman in action on the sidelines for the first time in the United Kingdom after the Toffees returned from the Dresden Cup at the weekend.

What time does it start?

Manchester United vs Everton will kick-off at 20:00 BST on Wednesday 03 August at Old Trafford.

Where can I watch it?

The match will be shown live on BT Sport 1 from 19:15, with a full repeat shown on MUTV from midnight.

The game will also be broadcasted on Facebook through Rooney and United's respective pages.

You can also follow the match with The Independent’s live blog from 19:00.

Who will be playing?

Both sides are expected to field full strength squads, with United already playing catch-up on Jose Mourinho’s pre-season plans after the derby match with Manchester City in Beijing was cancelled.

United have no injury concerns heading into the match, although Bastian Schweinsteiger is almost certain to be absent after being exiled from the first-team squad by Mourinho.

Everton will be without defender Matthew Pennington after he suffered a hamstring injury in the 4-3 penalty shootout defeat by Real Betis on Saturday. However, Gareth Barry came through the match in his first outing of the season along with Romelu Lukaku, and the pair are expected to feature despite the ongoing transfer saga linking the striker with Chelsea.

Phil Jagielka is unlikely to play though due to a recurrence of the hamstring injury that kept him out of Euro 2016.

Tickets
