Manchester United are without captain Wayne Rooney after the striker was ruled out of the Premier League clash with rivals Liverpool with through injury.

United manager Louis van Gaal makes three changes from the side that suffered a 2-1 defeat to Swansea a fortnight ago, with the return of David De Gea in goal following an incredible U-turn by the Spaniard that saw him sign a new four-year contract just days after seeing his move to Real Madrid collapse.

De Gea replaces the unconvincing Sergio Romero, while in Rooney’s absence Marouane Fellaini is selected in attack despite being a natural midfielder. £25m summer signing Morgan Schneiderlin is also dropped, with Michael Carrick coming back into the starting line-up.

Record teenage buy Anthony Martial is named among the substitutes' bench after completing a £36.3m move to United from Monaco on transfer deadline day.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has given a first Premier League start since completing his summer move from Burnley as he joins Christian Benteke in a two-pronged attack.

The Reds are also coming off a defeat following the 3-0 defeat to West Ham, but Rodgers has refused to ring the changes and names England striker Ings in the squad due to Philippe Coutinho’s suspension after he was sent-off against the Hammers.
