On his first Premier League start for the club, Wilson of course scored two goals in a 3-1 win over Hull City back in May of this year.
Rooney picked up a knock during Saturday's match against Hull. £59.7m British record signing Angel Di Maria is also out after picking up a hamstring injury in the same match against Hull.
"Di Maria cannot play, and Rooney cannot play," manager Louis van Gaal said before kick-off. "Wilson has the opportunity to show himself."
Van Gaal had previously aid of Wilson: "He has already been knocking on the door for a long time, that I have said in many press conferences.
"That is not only because he substituted Robin van Persie in the last match. I believe in him but he has competition with [Radamel] Falcao and Robin van Persie."
