2 mins: ...but it's United who nearly the open the scoring with just over a minute on the clock. Henrikh Mkhitaryan set Zlatan Ibrahimovic away down the right with a clever flick, and the Swede's low centre was met just inside the box by Paul Pogba. The Frenchman's shot was low, but not quite powerful or accurate enough to beat Hugo Lloris, who palmed away low to his right. An exciting start from the home side.
5 mins: That early opportunity has the home fans in good voice, and they nearly have reason to raise the roof again. Mkhitaryan once again is at the heart of it, and he tries to dissect the Tottenham defence with a cutting through ball for Ibrahimovic. Only an expert interception from Toby Alderweireld stops the ball from reaching its intended target.
9 mins: Tottenham have managed to slow the game down from the blistering pace in which it had begun. The visitors are keeping possession in their defensive third and then looking to exploit any gaps ahead that open up. A couple of times Spurs have managed to move play forward to Dele Alli, but the youngster has lacked composure to capitalise.
12 mins: Not so much leaning back as toppling over. That's the status of Mkhitaryan as he attempts to chest and volley in one movement outside of the Tottenham box. Unsurprisingly the result is a shot that heads supporters in the stand. Nevertheless, the Armenian once again looks eager to make the most of his time in the team.
16 mins: 'Non!' It's wonderful to hear Paul Pogba declare his frustrations in French as a throw-in goes against him as he tussles with Victor Wanyama by one of Sky Sports' touchline microphones.
18 mins: Christian Eriksen stings the hands of David de Gea with a fizzing free-kick from 30 yards. The United goalkeeper took an age in assembling his wall, and that nearly led to the Dane catching him out with a low strike. In the end, the out of position De Gea had to dive to his right in order to make a save he should not have needed to.
22 mins: Jan Vertonghen puts his body on the line to block Mkhitaryan's fierce goalbound effort! The Armenian playmaker has been heavily involved so far, and he has just come close to finishing a fine move that began with Michael Carrick delicately chipping into Ander Herrera, and then the Spaniard cueing up Mkhitaryan. Moments later, Herrera goes for goal himself, but it's straight into the gloves of Lloris.
There's been another instance of an individual hiding in the Old Trafford toilets overnight in order to watch a game.
29 mins: GOAL! MANCHESTER UNITED 1 TOTTENHAM 0:
Henrikh Mkhitaryan has a deserved goal! Three days after netting his first for the club in Europe, the Armenian has one in the Premier League. It stemmed from Harry Kane woefully surrendering possession on the halfway line, and that allowed Ander Herrera to slip a pass behind the Tottenham defence for Mkhitaryan to race on to. Good touches took him away from Toby Alderweireld's attempts at recovery, and what followed was a thumping drive into the roof of Hugo Lloris' net.
32 mins: Antonio Valencia is the first player cautioned by referee Bobby Madley. The right-back dived in on Danny Rose a split-second after the England defender had moved the ball on. It means that the Ecuadorian will be out of the midweek match at Crystal Palace.
