Gary McAllister is to hold talks with Portsmouth about joining the club's coaching set-up, the former Leeds manager said today.

It has been reported that the 44-year-old, who recently turned down a coaching role with Scotland, is set to become Pompey boss Paul Hart's assistant.

McAllister told Portsmouth paper The News: "I'm coming down for a chat but I can't say anything more than that at the moment.

"Things might become a bit clearer soon but I am going to have to leave it at that for now."

Pompey have lost all of their opening seven games of the season - a Premier League record.

They have been without an assistant manager since Brian Kidd, now at Manchester City, left the club in the summer.

McAllister was sacked as manager of Leeds in December. He previously had a spell in charge of Coventry.

A Portsmouth club spokesman today said he could not confirm reports linking McAllister to the club.
