The Magpies go into the final day of the season uncertain of safety

Having thrown away a lead against already relegated QPR, Newcastle go into the final day of the season uncertain of Premier League safety.

With QPR and Burnley already down, Hull City on 34 points occupy the final slot in the bottom three.

Newcastle are two points above them on 36, whilst Sunderland are not yet certain of survival on 37 points, however the Black Cats have an extra game in which to pick up the one point that will guarantee their survival. They play Arsenal away on Wednesday and Chelsea away on the final day.

Hull must win on the final day to have any chance of staying up and will need to pick up those three points at home to Manchester United.

Should Hull win, Newcastle must win also. The Magpies will be playing West Ham at St James' Park on the final day of the season.

Whilst Hull are the favourites to go down, Newcastle fans may feel a sense of deja vu in the build-up to next Sunday.

Heading into the final day of the 2008/09 campaign, there were three teams uncertain of safety - Newcastle, Hull and Sunderland.

On that final day, Hull were at home to Manchester United and Sunderland were playing Chelsea.

It all ended with Newcastle going down.

However at least Magpies fans can take some solace that they started the day in the relegation zone in 2008/09 whilst this season Hull are that unenvied team.
