Out to impress: Samuel Eto’o, Mesut Ozil and Marouane Fellaini - 10 deadline-day debut boys to watch in the Premier League

1. Samuel Eto’o (Chelsea, v Everton, Saturday)

At 32 Eto’o, after titles galore with Barcelona and Internazionale, arrives in England for what is presumably a last hurrah. He has spent two seasons banking millions in the relative obscurity of Anzhi Makhachkala but Jose Mourinho clearly believes he retains the sharpness that enabled him to score in two victorious Champions League finals.

2. Gareth Barry (Everton, v Chelsea, Saturday)

Roberto Martinez’s re-shaping of Everton moves to a new phase with the arrival of a passer in Barry, rescued from the purgatory of Manchester City’s bench. The next step is to persuade Everton’s back four to give him the ball, rather than look in vain for the head of Marouane Fellaini.

3. Mesut Ozil (Arsenal, v Sunderland, Saturday)

Having hoarded his millions, Arsène Wenger finally emptied the piggy bank bringing in Cristiano Ronaldo’s hand maiden. Ozil will now be expected to supply Olivier Giroud, Theo Walcott and Lukasz Podolski with the chances to launch Arsenal’s long-awaited title challenge.

4. Fabio Borini (Sunderland, v Arsenal, Saturday)

Ozil is not the only deadline-day signing on view at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland have a new recruit of their own and, lo and behold, Paolo Di Canio has signed a foreigner. Having previously been with Chelsea, Swansea and Liverpool, Borini at least should settle quickly.

5. Marouane Fellaini (Man United, v C Palace, Saturday)

Manchester United’s megastore can be expected to have a new range of Felli ‘Fro wigs on show as they start recouping the £4m overpaid for the Belgian giant, David Moyes having neglected to buy Fellaini when his release clause was operative. United’s second most expensive player, after Rio Ferdinand, will be expected to make a quick impact.

6. Libor Kozak (Aston Villa, v Newcastle United, Saturday)

The Czech striker topped the Europa League scoring chart with Lazio last season, but failed to score once in 19 Serie A appearances. Which means Villa fans are not sure whether they have signed another Christian Benteke, or another Savo Milosevic.

7. Christian Eriksen (Tottenham, v Norwich, Saturday)

Tottenham cashed in Gareth Bale to buy the bulk of a new team and one of the most attractive recruits should be unveiled today. Danish playmaker Eriksen has been a rising star for five years having been bought by Ajax at 16 and is now ready to shine in a major league.

8. Peter Odemwingie (Cardiff, v Hull, Saturday)

Peter Odemwingie finally escaped form Stalag Luft Hawthorns, crossing over the border to Wales. Malky Mackay will hope he can rediscover the goalscoring form with which he lit up the first half of his spell at West Bromwich, in which he scored three goals in his first seven games.

9. Morgan Amalfitano (West Brom, v Fulham, Saturday)

A one-cap wonder for France in February 2012, Albion fans will hope the loan signing from Marseilles copes better with English football than his younger brother, Romain, who signed for Newcastle last year but has since been sent on loan without playing a single league game.

10. Mamadou Sakho (Liverpool, v Swansea, Monday)

Martin Skrtel was man of the match in Liverpool’s win over Manchester United, but from the moment he misjudged a backpass in Brendan Rodgers’ first home match last season to hand Carlos Tevez a goal it has been clear he was not the manager’s idea of a ball-playing defender. Sakho can now show he is.
