Plenty of people believe the Premier League is ‘the best league in the world’, plenty don’t. What is undeniable is that it is a fiercely competitive division.

Gone are the days of a ‘top four’ dominating – last season, it was more like a top eight – and that means that the neutral observer is regularly treated to heavyweight clashes.

In fact, following Wednesday’s release of the 2016/17 Premier League fixtures, it appears that those mid-2000s ‘Grand Slam Sundays’ are a thing of the past.

Nowadays, there is a ‘big’ game every weekend, with at least two of the top flight’s best sides playing each other.

Arsenal entertain Liverpool on the opening day, with Chelsea and West Ham also squaring off. The Gunners then go on to play reigning champions Leicester City the following weekend, having been the only side to do the double over the Foxes last time out.

Liverpool travel to Tottenham at the end of August and, after the subsequent international break, Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola renew acquaintances in the first Manchester derby of the season.

It goes on and on. Take a look at the gallery above to see the 'best' game of each Premier League weekend up until the new year.
