Coronavirus: How has sport been affected?

Premier League clubs unanimously voted in favour of phase one of the training protocols, clearing the way for squads to get back to training on Tuesday, but more importantly setting a tone of consensus as the competition tries to get back for 19 June.

Monday’s latest videoconference was described as much more cordial and positive than the last two, as much of it was also taken up with clearing questions about the next stage of football’s return – particularly the safety concerns of players and managers.

There had been a feeling that there was nowhere near enough detail for that, compared to phase one, which will on Tuesday see groups of five start training together at Premier League bases.

A Premier League statement read: “Strict medical protocols of the highest standard will ensure everyone returns to training in the safest environment possible.

“The health and well-being of all participants is the Premier League’s priority, and the safe return to training is a step-by-step process.

“Full consultation will now continue with players, managers, clubs, the PFA and LMA as protocols for full-contact training are developed.”

More research and scientific studies were introduced on Monday, including a recent white paper by STATSports - the company who make GPS training vests for clubs – about the number of two-metre incursions per game.

Some individual clubs came with their own studies.

The Bundesliga’s return was also repeatedly referenced, and is seen as having significantly quietened some doubts, and helped shift the mood.

There will be another meeting on Friday.
