QPR 'haven't got the quality' says Harry Redknapp

Hoops boss says changes must be made if QPR are to bounce straight back from the Championship

Harry Redknapp cannot wait to see the back of QPR's “miserable season” but warned next term may not be much better if he is stuck with the current crop of players.

It took a record-breaking 17 matches for the west Londoners to record their first win of the campaign and they have managed only a further three since.

Such wretched form saw QPR's relegation confirmed with three matches remaining and leaves them bottom heading into the final day of the season.

Yesterday's 2-1 loss to Newcastle was the latest in a long line of disappointments and Redknapp, who replaced Mark Hughes in November, warned life in the npower Championship will not be a bed of roses.

"It's been a miserable season," the QPR manager said.

"Something has got to be done because if you take that team out there at the start of next season we wouldn't finish in the top half of the Championship.

"We haven't got the quality in my opinion, we're short of good players who can really play at the top level.

"We're going to have to do something about it. It's going to be a very difficult job."

Few could have predicted QPR's awful season after a host of high-profile arrivals in the summer.

Two-time Champions League winner Jose Bosingwa was one of those but has failed to impress the Loftus Road faithful, with poor performances compounded by his refusal to sit on the bench earlier in the campaign.

The Portuguese's popularity plummeted further yesterday as he helped Newcastle recover from conceding an early Loic Remy penalty to secure three points.

Hatem Ben Arfa netted from the spot after being tugged back by Bosingwa, whose weak back-pass then saw Yoan Gouffran slot home what proved to be the winner.

"Harry, take him off," bellowed the QPR support and they got their wish at half-time when Redknapp replaced him with Fabio.

"They were horrendous goals, both of them," he said.

"I thought it was a poor penalty and once we conceded the penalty we conceded another bad goal.

"It (crowd reaction to Bosingwa) was not going to help anyone. It was negative.

"He made a couple of errors but he didn't mean to do it and I took him off because we needed the crowd to be with us.

"People pay their money, we all get grief at some stages but it has been a miserable season."

While QPR are preparing for life in the second tier, Newcastle head into the final game of the season with survival already secured.

"I'm very pleased," Magpies boss Alan Pardew said. "It was a very important game for this football club.

"Particularly this year with the extra finance of staying in the Premier League.

"I thought the first 10 minutes we were almost playing with a noose around our neck we were so tense and tight and it took a decision by the referee.

"I don't really care if Arsenal win 4-0 [next weekend], if I'm honest. I'm sure Spurs will - but I only care that our fans enjoy themselves."
