Jamie Carragher branded Everton defender Ramiro Funes Mori “embarrassing” after he repeatedly hit the club crest on his shirt after being red carded for a horror tackle on Liverpool striker Divock Origi in an attempted show of pride.

Origi needed to be carried off the pitch on a stretcher with an ankle injury that could yet rule him out of action for the rest of the season, putting his participation at Euro 2016 with Belgium into serious doubt.

And with Everton already losing 2-0 to their Merseyside rivals, Funes Mori’s dismissal opened the door for the Reds to complete a 4-0 victory that puts Roberto Martinez’s future as Toffees manager in further doubt.

Funes Mori made the gesture towards the Everton fans as he left the field, appearing to try and rally the away fans despite his moment of madness costing his side severely.

It left no doubt in the mind of former Liverpool defender Carragher who was at fault for Everton’s defeat, and the Sky Sports pundit tore into the Argentina international for his reaction to the red card.

"He has let himself down with the challenge," he said. "It happens in football. I've made bad challenges and other players have made bad challenges, but going off the pitch he was kissing his badge to the Everton fans.

"I was made up he went off in some ways because it helped Liverpool get more goals, but why was he kissing the badge?

"Number one, he has only been here for two minutes and number two, why is he playing to the crowd because he has injured a Liverpool player? Are they going to be happy with that?

"They were getting battered in the game and he's now going to miss the biggest game of the season when they've got Jagielka out.

"It's embarrassing. What is he doing? Everton fans won't fall for that nonsense.

"It was the only challenge anyone put in by the way, but it was a bad one."

Funes Mori will now miss the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United this weekend, as well as the Premier League fixtures with Bournemouth and Leicester after being hit with a three-match ban.
