1960-61 CUP WINNERS' CUP SEMI-FINAL

Rangers 2 Wolves 0; Wolves 1 Rangers 1 (Rangers win 3-1 on agg)

The first Anglo-Scottish meeting in European competition. Rangers took a decisive first-leg lead through Ralph Brand and Alex Scott. Scottish pride then took a battering before the second leg when England beat Scotland 9-3 at Wembley. But Rangers restored some self-respect by completing an aggregate 3-1 win. Rangers lost the final to Fiorentina.

1969-70 EUROPEAN CUP SEMI-FINAL

Leeds 0 Celtic 1; Celtic 2 Leeds 1 (Celtic win 3-1 on agg)

The first European meeting between the champions of Scotland and England. The Scots won the first leg with an early goal from George Connelly. In the second leg, Billy Bremner silenced Parkhead, but a tired Leeds - who had played seven cup-ties in 32 days - succumbed to goals from John Hughes and Bobby Murdoch. Celtic lost the final to Feyenoord.

1980-81 EUROPEAN CUP 2ND ROUND

Aberdeen 0 Liverpool 1; Liverpool 4 Aberdeen 0 (Liverpool win 5-0 on agg)

Alex Ferguson's first European tie against English opposition as a manager saw his Scottish champions, including Alex McLeish and Gordon Strachan, lose 5-0 on aggregate to their English counterparts. Terry McDermott gave Liverpool a first-leg win. A 4-0 Anfield romp then proved the gulf in class. Liverpool went on to win their third European Cup.

1981-82 UEFA CUP 1ST ROUND

Ipswich 1 Aberdeen 1; Aberdeen 3 Ipswich 1 (Aberdeen win 4-2 on agg)

Ferguson's second European managerial tie against the English had a happier conclusion. Aberdeen were drawn against the holders, Ipswich. John Hewitt equalised Frans Thijssen's first-half opener in the first leg. In the return a Strachan penalty put Aberdeen 1-0 up. Ipswich equalised with a penalty, before Aberdeen's Peter Weir scored twice.

1984-85 UEFA CUP 3RD ROUND

Man Utd 2 Dundee Utd 2; Dundee Utd 2 Man Utd 3 (Man Utd win 5-4 on agg)

Manchester United's only previous European meeting against Scottish opposition. Two goals from Paul Hegarty and Paul Sturrock cancelled Bryan Robson and Gordon Strachan's strikes in the first leg. Despite Hegarty and Davie Dodds scoring at Tannadice, United prevailed through an own goal, a Mark Hughes strike and Arnold Muhren's winner.

1992-93 EUROPEAN CUP 2ND ROUND

Rangers 2 Leeds 1; Leeds 1 Rangers 2 (Rangers win 4-2 on agg)

The third and last time, before tonight, that the champions of England and Scotland have met in Europe. Gary McAllister gave Leeds an early first-leg lead at Ibrox but John Lukic then scored an own goal and Ally McCoist made it 2-1. McCoist and Mark Hateley scored 2-0 in the return before Eric Cantona'sconsolation.
