Merseyside derby sets new TV record for Premier League game with 5.5million peak audience

Sky Sports confirmed that the goalless draw between Everton and Liverpool at Goodison Park smashed the previous record of 4.3million viewers

It might not have been much of a spectacle in the end, but Sunday’s Merseyside derby was the most-watched Premier League match of all time, with a peak audience of 5.5million.

Sky Sports confirmed that the goalless draw between Liverpool and Everton at Goodison Park smashed the previous record of 4.3million, set by the 2012 Manchester derby which was so influential in the title race that year and City’s first Premier League trophy.

The game itself was not quite the advertisement for the Premier League that Sky would have hoped for, lacking the usual bite of a derby game with little at stake and no fans to create an atmosphere as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

With the majority of the population at home more than usual, and starved of any live sport in recent months, the Premier League restart has been regularly pulling in huge viewing figures. Nearly 4 million watched Bournemouth lose to Crystal Palace in the BBC’s first live league game for 30 years.
