Victor Valdes says he's 'fighting to be free' in bid to end his Manchester United nightmare

Victor Valdes has sent a cryptic message to thank Manchester United fans for giving him the support to continue pushing to make himself a better footballer, despite Louis van Gaal leaving him out of his first-team plans.

Valdes has been exiled from the United squad and his set to be sold in January after a public falling out with Van Gaal, who claimed that the goalkeeper’s alleged refusal to play in an Under-21s match led to his banishment.

The former Barcelona goalkeeper has not played for United this season after Van Gaal brought in Sergio Romero to support No 1 David De Gea, and youngster Sam Johnstone has featured on the substitutes’ bench ahead of Valdes.

But despite being informed that his Old Trafford career is over before it even got going, 33-year-old Valdes has not given up on his career and he posted a picture on Instagram that contained the message “I fight to be free”.

Valdes’s note, written in Spanish, said: “What does not kill you will make you stronger.”

The Spain international also included a lengthy caption, again in Spanish, which read: “Not to disappoint those who want to see me play again, the only motivation that pushes me to continue working. I fight to be free and again enjoy my profession.”

Two of Valdes’s United team-mates, Ander Herrera and Antonio Valencia, liked the post, although he is highly unlikely to feature in the Premier League before the transfer window reopens and the likelihood is he will return to Spain should United give him the green light.
