Vitesse Arnhem vs Chelsea match report: Diego Costa shines as Cesc Fabregas grabs first Blues goal in easy victory

Blues continue their preparations with a comfortable victory

Chelsea's summer investment looks like it could pay off after both Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa delivered star performances in the Blues' 3-1 victory over Vitesse Arnhem.

Fabregas, signed from Barcelona for £27m, scored a magnificent free-kick as Jose Mourinho resisted the temptation to give Didier Drogba his second debut a decade after his first.

Mohamed Salah and Nemanja Matic grabbed the other goals as Chelsea eased to another pre-season win.

The Ivory Coast international watched on from the stands as Costa delivered a forward master class, effectively creating every goal, while posing a very real goal threat himself.

Having joined the Stamford Bridge side for £32m after winning the La Liga title with Atletico Madrid last year, the 25-year-old follows a long line of expensive Chelsea signings in attack.

While the likes of Andriy Shevchenko and Fernando Torres may be classed as considerable failures in the Stamford Bridge hall of shame, the early signs are good from the latest Blues recruit.

"He's very intelligent the way he presses and he's a team man," said Mourinho at full-time.

"He had two big chances to score but he prefers not to risk, but played for the team. We can feel he's happy to be with us and we're very happy with it."

The match got off to a stunning start as, after just three minutes, Matic played a sumptuous ball straight into Costa's path before the Spain international selflessly played in Salah to fire home.

Chelsea's new star striker was part of the action again after twenty minutes, surging through the Vitesse defence before being hauled to the ground just outside the area.

Fabregas, a constant thorn in Mourinho's side during spells with Arsenal and Barca, then curled a wonderful effort straight into the top corner as the Blues took control.

Nemanja Matic was also on form for Chelsea Costa's impressive afternoon was completed deep into the second half after another powerful advance allowed him to pass to Matic who was left with an easy chance to score.

Kelvin Leerdom, one of the few players to impress for the hosts, kept Petr Cech on alert but this was a commanding display from Mourinho's 'little horses'.

While Uros Djurdevic salvaged a late consolation goal for Vitesse, the most disappointing factor for the Portuguese manager will have been yet another timid display from Torres.

Luckily for the Chelsea boss, however, Costa and Drogba offer him real menace upfront.
