Manchester United needed an injury-time own goal to give them victory and send them top of the Premier League as they beat Watford 2-1 at Vicarage Road.

An early volley from Memphis Depay saw the Netherlands forward – who was starting in an unfamiliar striker role – score to put United ahead, and they would go on to hold the lead for the majority of the game, despite losing midfielder Andre Herrera after 25 minutes to a leg injury.

Watford did have their chances, although striker Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney were unable to link up and David De Gea was once again impressing in-between the sticks.

However, things changed when Ighalo picked up the ball in the United area with less than 10 minutes left. Despite facing away from goal, replacement Marcos Rojo hauled down Ighalo to concede a needless penalty.

Deeney struck the penalty straight down the middle as De Gea dived to his right, but no sooner had the score been levelled than United struck back.

Midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger picked up a rebound at the back post after a Jesse Lingard effort, and his half-shot was taken over the line by Deeney to give United the three points.
