ARSENAL

Needs: Long-term replacement for keeper Jens Lehmann. Defensive cover.

Budget: £15m.

Linked with: Nigel Reo-Coker (West Ham), Yohan Pelé (Le Mans), Gareth Bale (Southampton), Leighton Baines (Wigan), Craig Gordon (Hearts), Artur Boruc (Celtic).

Prediction: Arsène Wenger says he "won't make any signings in January", but said that last year before spending nearly £20m. A significant signing would still be a surprise.

ASTON VILLA

Needs: Attacker, defender and a third-choice goalkeeper.

Budget: £15m to £20m.

Linked with: Matthew Upson (Birmingham), Robbie Keane (Tottenham), Stephen Pearson (Celtic), James Milner (Newcastle), Greg Halford (Colchester), Freddy Eastwood (Southend), David Nugent (Preston).

Prediction: Though the club do not expect to sign James Milner, Martin O'Neill has money to burn on other prospects.

BLACKBURN ROVERS

Needs: Right-back and midfielder.

Budget: £2m to £5m.

Linked with: Andriy Nesmachniy (Dynamo Kiev), Vincenzo Montella (Roma), Michael Ball (PSV), Tomas Sivok (Sparta Prague), David Dunn (Birmingham), Stephen Warnock (Liverpool).

Prediction: Mark Hughes has spent most of the money made from the Craig Bellamy sale. Any new players will have to be cheap and able to adapt quickly as Hughes needs bodies to cope with the extra Uefa Cup games.

BOLTON WANDERERS

Needs: No one.

Budget: £2m.

Linked with: David Beckham (Real Madrid), Alessandro dos Santos (Urawa Reds), Branko Ilic (Domzale), James Beattie (Everton).

Prediction: The £8m summer signing of Nicolas Anelka has left the money jar a little bare. But Big Sam's cupboard is well stocked. Any permanent signings would be a surprise, unless Ivan Campo returns to Spain. Allardyce may get a player or two on loan as cover.

CHARLTON ATHLETIC

Needs: Defenders and forwards.

Budget: £5m.

Linked: with Steven Pressley (unattached), Bobby Zamora, Marlon Harewood, Hayden Mullins (West Ham), Julian Gray (Birmingham).

Prediction: To avoid relegation the club will give Alan Pardew part of next year's budget so Darren Bent does not have to be sold to raise cash. Pressley, a defender, should join in the next 24 hours, while bids for either forward Zamora or Harewood are possible.

CHELSEA

Needs: A right-back and possibly a forward.

Budget: Unlimited.

Linked with: Micah Richards (Man City), Fernando Torres (Athletico Madrid), David Villa (Valencia), Pepe Ferreira (Porto), Miguel (Valencia), Matthew Upson (Birmingham), Gomex (PSV).

Prediction: John Terry's back problem leaves Jose Mourinho short in defence: Richards should sign. But with Andrei Shevchenko yet to settle, Mourinho may buy another forward.

EVERTON

Needs: Right-back, centre-back, forward.

Budget: £5m.

Linked with: David Nugent (Preston), Kevin Davies (Bolton), Dario Simic (Milan), Nigel Reo-Coker (West Ham), Edgar Davids (Tottenham), Joey Barton (Man City).

Prediction: David Moyes needs to strengthen and does not have a great deal to spend, although his kitty could be swelled if he manages to off-load James Beattie and Simon Davies.

FULHAM

Needs: Centre-back and creative midfielder.

Budget: £5m to £7m approx.

Linked with: Shaun Maloney (Celtic), Clint Dempsey (NE Revolution), Vincenzo Montella (Roma), Lassana Diarra (Chelsea), Simon Davies (Everton), Per Nilsson (Odd Grenland).

Prediction: Chris Coleman may sell in order to re-invest; Luis Boa Morte and Claus Jensen are prime candidates to leave. Bids for Davies and Dempsey are expected.

LIVERPOOL

Needs: Right-back and winger.

Budget: Depends on Dubai International Capital bid.

Linked with: Lucas Neill (Blackburn), Daniel Alves (Seville), Ricardo Quaresma (Porto), Simão (Benfica), Francisco Pavon (Real Madrid), Matthew Upson (Birmingham), Gareth Bale (Southampton).

Prediction: Depends on when and how the DIC takeover occurs. Without their money, Rafael Benitez will again have to contend with cheaper options. With it, ambition goes into overdrive.

MANCHESTER CITY

Needs: Striker and defender.

Budget: £2m.

Linked with: Afonso Alves (Heerenveen), Shaun Wright-Phillips (Chelsea), Ivan Klasnic (W Bremen), Marouane Chamakh (Bordeaux), Luis Suarez (Groningen).

Prediction: Without a breakthrough in the proposed takeover of the club Stuart Pearce is likely to find his hands tied once more. However, if Micah Richards is sold, cash would be available for signings in several outfield positions.

MANCHESTER UNITED

Needs: A forward and midfielder.

Budget: £20m.

Linked with: Rio Mavuba (Bordeaux), Owen Hargreaves (B Munich), Fernando Torres (Athletico Madrid), Miroslav Klose (W Bremen), Nigel Reo-Coker (West Ham), Gareth Bale (Southampton).

Signed: Henrik Larsson (Helsingborgs, loan).

Prediction: Sir Alex Ferguson has already recalled Giuseppe Rossi from Newcastle, signed Larsson and is planning to make another move for Hargreaves.

MIDDLESBROUGH

Needs: Defender and a forward.

Budget: £2m to £5m.

Linked with: Craig Gordon (Hearts), Martin Lejsal (FC Brno), Jérémie Aliadière (Arsenal), David Nugent (Preston), Joey Barton (Manchester City), John Carew (Lyon).

Prediction: Gareth Southgate needs to strengthen and will try to raise funds and a clear-out of older high-earners is likely. He will also try to persuade Jonathan Woodgate to sign permanently and get Aliadière on loan.

NEWCASTLE UNITED

Needs: Defenders and a striker.

Budget: £10m.

Linked with: Mark Viduka (Middlesbrough), Shaun Wright-Phillips (Chelsea), Sylvain Distin (Man City), Matt Jarvis (Gillingham), James Beattie (Everton), Jermain Defoe (Tottenham), Darren Bent (Charlton), Gareth Bale (Southampton).

Prediction: Glenn Roeder has money and should launch bids for a central defender and a striker. Defoe and Bent may be out of reach but Everton are willing to sell Beattie.

PORTSMOUTH

Needs: A centre-back, pacy winger and striker.

Budget: £10m approx.

Linked with: Sulley Ali Muntari (Udinese), Tarik Elyounoussi (Fredrikstad), Shaun Wright-Phillips (Chelsea), Robert Earnshaw (West Brom), David Nugent (Preston).

Prediction: Harry Redknapp has money to spend and will probably buy a forward and a winger. But Manuel Fernandes will return to Benfica unless they reduce their asking price.

READING

Needs Striker. Defensive cover.

Budget: £3m.

Linked with: Emerse Fae (Nantes), John Mensah (Rennes), Matthew Upson (Birmingham), Greg Halford (Colchester), Will Hoskins (Rotherham), Kevin Thomson & Scott Brown (Hibernian), Mohamed Aboutrika (Ahly).

Prediction: With limited resources, Steve Coppell will be thinking about consolidation. Bargains from the Championship and Europe are on the cards.

SHEFFIELD UNITED

Needs: Striker, defender and a midfielder.

Budget: £7m.

Linked with: Greg Halford (Colchester), Goran Gavrancic (Dynamo Kiev), Matthew Kilgallon (Leeds), Julio Cesar (Internazionale), Amr Zaki (Zamalek), David Nugent (Preston).

Prediction: Neil Warnock has made eight players available for transfer, and already tabled bids for two players. Expect at least two or three players to come in.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Needs: A genuine winger and defensive cover.

Budget £5m to £10m.

Linked with: Curtis Davies (West Brom), Matthew Upson (Birmingham), Stewart Downing (Middlesbrough), Anthony Vanden Borre (Anderlecht), Luis Boa Morte (Fulham), Giles Barnes (Derby), Gareth Bale (Southampton).

Prediction: Despite spending over £30m in the summer Martin Jol is still not completely happy with his squad. Expect a left winger to arrive.

WATFORD

Needs: A prolific striker, a centre-back and a central midfielder.

Budget: £5m approx.

Linked with: Chris Perry (West Brom), Ade Akinbiyi (Sheffield United), Greg Halford (Colchester), Julian Gray (Birmingham), David Healy (Leeds), Will Hoskins (Rotherham), Billy Sharp (Scunthorpe), Freddy Eastwood (Southend).

Prediction: Aidy Boothroyd said recently he will be looking for three forwards. These are likely to come from the Championship.

WEST HAM UNITED

Needs: Centre-back, full-back and a winger.

Budget: £15m to £20m.

Linked with: Shaun Wright-Phillips (Chelsea), Matthew Upson (Birmingham), Claus Jensen (Fulham), Mark Viduka (Middlesbrough), Curtis Davies (West Brom), Darren Bent (Charlton).

Prediction: Alan Curbishley already has a good squad at his disposal, so a total overhaul is out of the question. However, investment, especially in defence is essential.

WIGAN ATHLETIC

Needs: A forward.

Budget: £5m.

Linked with: Nathan Ellington (West Brom), Alessandro dos Santos (Urawa Reds), Cameron Jerome & Matthew Upson (Birmingham), Seydou Keita (Lens), James Beattie (Everton).

Signed: Andreas Granqvist (Helsingborgs).

Prediction: Paul Jewell has already signed one player, albeit on loan. Henri Camara's injury until February and a lack of striking cover makes it likely a forward will be added.
