Rangers failed to reach the second phase of the Champions' League last night. Needing to beat Monaco at home to be sure of progressing, the Scottish champions could only draw 2-2. Galatasaray and Sturm Graz, who drew by the same score in Istanbul, both finished ahead of Rangers in Group D.

Rangers could never impose themselves, even though Kenny Miller put them ahead after three minutes. Francisco Da Costa equalised seven minutes before half-time. In the second half Michael Mols put Rangers ahead again, only for Marco Simone to score the equaliser which ended Rangers' chances of further progress in the competition.

Arsenal, who were already sure of reaching the second group stage, surrendered their unbeaten record in the Champions' League when they were beaten 3-0 by Shaktar Donetsk in Ukraine.

Arsÿne Wenger's team, which contained several reserves, held out until 11 minutes before half-time when Serhiy Atelkin scored. In the 57th minute Andriy Vorobei added Shaktar's second. Shaktar's subtitute, Olexiy Bielik, wrapped up the scoring.
