Soccer Aid result: Rest of the World defeat England on penalties in charity match at Old Trafford

Celebrities and former players lined up together to raise more funds for Unicef than at any previous edition of the event

An England XI was beaten on penalties on Sunday as their Rest of the World opponents lifted the Soccer Aid trophy at Old Trafford after Unicef’s annual charity match.

The game, which raised more funds for Unicef than any previous edition of the event, saw former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney managing the England team while the Rest of the World were coached by Harry Redknapp.

Former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane opened the scoring early in the second half after a drab opening period, but England immediately fired back through comedian Yung Filly. A penalty shootout ensued, with musician Chunkz missing the decisive spot-kick as the Rest of the World emerged victorious.

Among the celebrities to take part were singer Olly Murs, comedians John Bishop and Lee Mack, and radio DJs Roman Kemp and Marvin Humes. Meanwhile, former players included John Terry, Darren Fletcher, Claude Makelele and Michael Essien.

It was the second edition of the fixture to involve female players, with former Arsenal forward Kelly Smith and current Manchester United manager Casey Stoney – another former England international – among those taking to the pitch.
