Arsene Wenger couldn’t resist bringing up Alexis Sanchez’s new Manchester United contract as he spoke for the first time since the Chilean’s swap deal which saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan move to Arsenal.

Sanchez has joined Paul Pogba as United’s top earner on wages of more than £300,000-a-week, with Wenger previously claiming that Arsenal did all they could to tie the 29-year-old to another deal at the Emirates.

However, United blew them out of water with their offer with Sanchez finally signing on the dotted line on Monday.

And Wenger has admitted he does not blame Sanchez for taking up United’s offer and said at his age the four-and-a-half-year contract could be his last contract in football.

“Overall we lose a world class player and gain a world class player,” Wenger said ahead of the EFL Cup semi-final second-leg with Chelsea. “I think he goes to a great club and has a great contract. You can understand it when a professional player can combine both aspects.

“He is 29 years old, it is maybe his last contract. Financially it’s important. He could combine both. He’s going to a great club.

“Sanchez is a great guy and has always been committed. He is a guy who loves football. When he’s on the football pitch he gives his all.”
