Andre Schurrle feared being stuck at Chelsea as £27m Wolfsburg deal went to the wire

Andre Schurrle has revealed he was "stressed out" and had "frayed nerves" because he feared his £27million move from Chelsea to Wolfsburg would not go through.

Schurrle, 24, was linked with an exit from Stamford Bridge for almost the whole of the window but a deal was not done as Chelsea pursued Juan Cuadrado from Fiorentina.

The World Cup winner is believed to have agreed terms with the Bundesliga club early in the negotiations but the two clubs could not agree a fee.

"Towards the end, everything did draw out somewhat, which was stressful for me and really frayed my nerves," the attacker told reporters. "Now I am finally at VfL Wolfsburg and I am very, very happy about that.

"It wasn't my first transfer, so I was aware that these things can take longer than expected before all parties have agreed on the terms.

"That considered, I was a little tense, because I really wanted to make the move to Wolfsburg. Despite that though, I was always pretty convinced that it would work out in the end."

After an £18m from Bayer Leverkusen in 2013, Schurrle impressed for the Blues in parts but struggled to hold down a regular first-team place - too often he was ineffective and never gained the trust of Jose Mourinho.

Schurrle was desperate for a move back to Germany despite offers from France and Spain.

"It was my express wish to return to Germany," Schurrle added. "I had offers from Spain and France too but, at the end of the day, I really wanted to return to Germany.

"Wolfsburg made their interest known very early on. I took a look at the team and the prospects of the club, which seem very good.

"For me it quickly became apparent where the journey was going to take me."

He also revealed that Germany boss Joachim Low advised him that Wolfsburg would be the right club for Schurrle to join.

"We first spoke about a move to Wolfsburg quite some time ago because he believed that, considering the tactical approach and playing style of the team, the move to Wolfsburg would be the right move for me."
