After Arsene Wenger admitted that his defence needed bolstering, the Gunners are looking to express further interest in signing 23-year old Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa from French champions Montpellier. He has made 168 league appearances for Montpellier after making his debut in 2007 and recently earned his first cap for France. Yanga-Mbiwa has only one year remaining on his contract, so could be available for just £7m.

It looks certain that Fulham's attacking midfielder Clint Dempsey will be leaving Craven Cottage before the transfer window shuts, after being left out of Fulham's opening two games, and Arsenal are one of the favourites to sign the American.

Arsenal have also been linked with Swansea City right-back Angel Rangel, with Wenger believing the 30-year-old would provide good back-up to Bacary Sagna.

Wenger is reportedly considering a move for Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye, as he looks for a replacement for Alex Song who recently made the move away from north London to Barcelona. Newcastle are yet to receive an offer from Arsenal for the 26-year old French international, though it is thought it'll be in the region of £15m.

Long, long shot
Gunners legend Ian Wright has come out and said that he believes Jermaine Defoe could be the new Robin van Persie if Arsene Wenger were to sign him. It is unlikely that Defoe will make the move from north London rivals Tottenham, however after failing to score in both their opening games, Defoe is just the sort of player Wenger might be looking at as a replacement for the Dutchman.
